In the footsteps of the Inca 3: PeruRail to the Machu Picchu Pueblo

Today we travel. Take a look at the Machu Picchu pueblo, aka Agua Caliente on Google maps. That is our destination.

Early morning. Ollantaytambo station. Up to this point we had been well connected to previous locations. At Ollantaytambo station I knew we were going someplace different.

PeruRail uses small gauge track. Same as the Yukon & White Pass railway we have traveled before.

The scenery is spectacular. Hard to describe even with photos.

At one point, I looked up and saw just mountains through both skydomes.

See the small yellow and green dots. Those are porters for the trekers hiking in.

Terraces and ruins scattered throughout the area. Still used by present day farmers.

Notice more greenery as opposed to dry, dusty land? We are now on the edge of the Amazon rain forest. Another tick mark on the bucket list.

Two rail cross point.

End of the line for us. We were met by a travel guide to lead us to the hotel.

Not much room for error.

The town has grown quickly in the past 20 years. Tourism.

And just beyond that mountaintop? Our destination.

Notice something missing in the past few photos? No cars. There are no roads into or out of town. Look down the street and you will see a bus. It's the transportation to the top of the mountain and back. The buses arrived via the railway. Also note the guy with the push cart. He and others like him are the local version of a delivery van. FedEx, UPS and Amazon trucks were unheard of.

Local delivery.

Hotel entrance. The Inkaterra Machu Picchu hotel.

Calm, quiet and comfortable

Our "room" is up there somewhere.

One of the local brews. Very good.

See the kitty in the jungle?

I can only describe the town as an outpost. No roads to or from another location. No airports. Transportation is either the railway or your own two feet. Tourism has created a boom town.

Next post: We finally get to the Machu Picchu citadel. It's preceded by a roller-coaster bus ride up the mountain.
